they won’t forget…

May 29, 2011

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

We’re all familiar with this verse, right?

I used to think that this verse meant that if i trained my kid’s according to Scripture, walked them through a sinner’s prayer, had Bible studys with them, etc, that it was guaranteed that they would eventually choose to serve God.

i know differently now.

i remember hearing someone define that verse in this way:  they said that if you raise your kids according to the Bible, teach them God’s Word and give them wise, godly counsel, there’s NO guarantee that they will choose to serve the Lord.  But it does mean that those morals and those Scriptures we taught them will not be for nothing.

They will remember those verses.  And they will hear our wise counsel.

BUT, they may NOT choose to apply it.

And they may NOT choose to serve the Lord.

God gives us a free will and no matter what we’ve been taught, it’s up to us to make the choice to serve God.

On the flip side of that, God calls us as parents to be faithful to the calling he’s placed on our lives.

He’s called us to train up our kids in the way they should go and to tell them of God’s love when we sit with them and when we walk with them and as we go through our days with them.

it’s no small task that God has called parents to.

however, he promises to be our strength when we are weak.  and he promises that his Word contains everything we need for life and godliness.

and he promises to be faithful even when we are faithless.

there are some days when this parenting task seems like more than I can handle…..

that’s because I can’t handle it without God.

God is so faithful to guide us and give us wisdom, and he delights in giving us good things.  He will never deny our request for help in our parenting.

All he asks is that we believe and that we are faithful.
